Ep 019: Build your network to build your real estate empire | Travis Chappell
01:53 – Her best story is she was looking for a newspaper for foreclosure properties and found a property which was listed twice with the same address so they went to the bank and bought the note of the property and surprisingly, there was a second home attached to it. There was no underlying mortgage on the first property and the second had a $3,500 note on the house.
02:45 – Travis shares his story that is more like a lesson learned. There is this handy man that they worked with, this guy brought some deal to Travis and his dad and started negotiating for bringing the deal under the table including a finders fee for him instead of doing an equity partnership. After they did that, the guy wanted more of the deal and ended up spending more than they previously agreed. The lesson they learned is that you have to be fair and stick to what you had previously agreed to. Always respect the concept of the fairness.
06:10 – Travis was once a door to door sales person, recruiting people and training them in that kind of industry. The way he got into podcasting is he realized that he didn’t want what he was doing, he’s always looking 5 to 10 years into the future. He tries to put himself 10 years from now and looking back on his past asks a question “What will have needed to happen in the past 10 years in order for me to be happy about where I am?”. He didn’t want to be a door to door salesman anymore.
07:55 – He picked podcasting because he didn’t like the attention he could get on YouTube. He went to his favorite podcaster John Lee Dumas’ website and started looking at his income. He was surprised at how much money he’d made and that was the deciding factor for him to do a podcast too.
11:02 – Travis talks about the show. The show is called Build Your Network and it’s all about networking relationships, how to connect to people the right way and how to build good relationships with solid people.
11:17 – Travis says that real estate is his long term plan as a long term wealth building strategy and believes in it very much. Travis believes that real estate will help create a generational wealth.
12:15 – Travis says that real estate is almost a part of his DNA, he grew up around real estate. His dad was a real estate agent since he was 3 years old.
13:28 – His dad was the one who helped him make deals and walked him through everything. His dad was an agent for the last 20 years. Virtual mentors and Bigger Pockets made a huge mentorship platform for Travis to learn and be an expert in real estate.
16:30 – “It’s all about your belief system” say’s Travis, “If somebody has figured it out and done it then you can” added by Travis, it’s just a matter of how you want it. Either you have to move somewhere with a lot of opportunity or you need to be comfortable enough to invest in real estate and the biggest thing is you are willing to risk it.
17:51 – Travis believes that time is the ultimate asset, not money. You can always make money back, it’s like an energy that goes and flows. If you have a closed fist and you’re not willing to let go of your money you also don’t have an open hand to receive money either says Travis.
20:34 – Travis says that there’s a true freedom in commitment. I will do this until I succeed says Travis, pertaining to his podcast. He did not quit because he committed from the beginning to do it for as long as it took in order to make it successful.
23:01 – Travis went through financial struggles, personal struggles and many different things that he could easily use as an excuse to not keep going and keep producing. If he did not do it, it’d be a huge regret for him and he fears regret more than failure says Travis.
25:06 – When you start changing peoples’ lives it’s hard for your show not to get interactions says Travis. People get in touch with you and get real results from a piece of advice you give for free.
26:44 – Travis believes that real estate provides a truly passive income especially if you have property managers. You literally don’t touch it and it pays you money.
27:46 – Travis is sure that people will live somewhere. Whether you buy a house, rent a house, an apartment or a condo, you have to live somewhere so there is a safety in investing in properties because it’ll always be there and will always be needed.
